The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of case documents concerning the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a case that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.
The public have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Ensure full disclosure.”
Next Steps
This legislation next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on Monday that he would sign the measure.
Even though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and stated he would sign the measure if it comes to him.
Reaction
The Democratic party, along with those affected and their advocates who were watching from a public section, cheered after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he was concerned the measure would make public identifying details of witnesses, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
